U OF L CONFERENCE TO ADDRESS RETENTION,
HIRING OF BLACKS IN HIGHER EDUCATION
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Improving higher education opportunities and experiences for
African-American students will be the focus of an April 14-16 conference presented by the
University of Louisville.
The
Kentucky Association of Blacks in Higher Education will lead workshops and presentations
during "Leadership and Change: Collaboration for the 21st Century," an annual conference that
will be held at The Inn at Jewish Hospital hotel and conference center
Discussion
topics will include higher education opportunities for African-Americans in rural Kentucky,
teaching strategies, communication styles and the history of blacks in Kentucky. There also will be
reports on African-American retention and graduation rates and on hiring of black faculty and
staff.
Speakers and
presenters will include Gordon Davies, president of the Kentucky Council on Post-Secondary
Education; Ralph Fitzpatrick, U of L special assistant to the president for minority affairs; Joe
McMillan, professor emeritus, U of L; and Renita Weems, a theology professor at Vanderbilt
University and noted author who has been featured in Essence magazine.
Full
conference registration is $85; students may attend for $35. Meals for the April 15 banquet and
April 16 breakfast are $20 and $10 respectively. Registration deadline is March 24.
