The Environmental Education Center's program offers mountain students, young and old, the opportunity to learn from the earth, to understand and appreciate better the rich heritage of our region, and their role of responsible stewardship for its future. It provides students from other regions an interpretation of our culture and natural environment through first hand experiences. It seeks to present environmental education not as a single subject but as an integral part of all subjects. We hope to help participants learn by involvement and discovery. Groups of 25-70 persons for day, overnight, week, or longer can be accommodated. All ages and learning groups from elementary to adult are welcome. A full teaching staff is provided with lesson topics in areas of ecology, man in Kentucky, observation, conservation, physical world, as well as recreation and night activities. Special annual events include wildflower weekends and a fall color weekend. Internships are available. Minimum tuition charge. Publications include THE GREEN BOOK--lessons of environmental education with preparation material and sample lessons for teachers. Cost $1.00 + .40 postage.

The Portland Museum, now entering its fourteenth year, is comprised of historic Beech Grove, an 1852 brick residence, and its modern additions. A kinetic sculpture, "Balancing the River," spans the fifty foot roof. A permanently installed exhibit, "Portland: the land, the river and the people," guides visitors through 400 years of development around the Falls of the Ohio. The 23-minute light and sound tour includes mannequins, dioramas and a contour model of the Falls of the Ohio as it existed over two hundred years ago. In addition, the facility houses an arts and humanities gallery for changing exhibits and programs, a gallery interpreting the life of the Skene family which occupied the house for over 80 years, a media room for viewing films and videos about the Ohio River and its history, a children's gallery and a letterpress print shop. In addition, the Museum is located within easy driving distance of the McAlpine Lock and Dam. Tours of that facility can be arranged with the Corps of Engineers.
