Division of General Internal Medicine

The Division of General Internal Medicine faculty will endeavor to develop an educational environment which is conducive to active learning on the part of its students, residents, and fellows, which encourages basic and clinical research studies, and which supports high quality medical treatment for the patients entrusted to its care.

Objectives are targeted in each of the following areas of scholarship:

Patient Care:

To provide high quality, personalized medical services of continually improving quality and recognized excellence for all of our patients. In particular, we recognize our historical responsibility to provide primary care for the medically underserved populations of Jefferson County and the surrounding areas of Western Kentucky and Southern Indiana, supported by tertiary care referral services as indicated. We will continue to develop our referral base in pursuit of this goal.
To maintain and improve established networks in the community and contiguous areas for the referral of patients needing subspecialty care.

Educational Objectives:

To teach medical students, residents, and fellows by example the high ethical standards of integrity and professionalism viewed as the traditional hallmarks of the physician
To emphasize the principles of evidence based medical treatment, discussed in the context of cost-effective, outcomes oriented care.
To encourage the development of generalist physicians and to promote an understanding of primary care and the concepts of managed care.
To promote an inclusion and professional development of historically underrepresented minorities.
To foster the understanding and appropriate use of clinical practice guidelines and the techniques of critical appraisal of the medical literature.
To provide ongoing educational opportunities of the highest caliber to practitioners in the local medical community.

Research Objectives:

To increase the proportion of faculty engaged in research studies, and to encourage the translation of important findings into presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
To encourage basic as well as clinically-oriented research, including health services research studying such areas as clinical effectiveness, medical outcomes, and cost-benefit analyses in collaboration with the University's Center for Health Policy and Research.

Mentoring and other essential support of junior faculty will be provided to assist with their achievement of these objectives.
