Illinois State University Nontenure-track Faculty Vote "Yes" for Union

Nontenure-track faculty voted 131 to 79 on April 23, 2003 to be represented
by the Illinois State University Nontenure Track Faculty Association-
IEA/NEA.  Voter turnout was 70% of the 300-plus eligible voters.  The ISU
NTTFA began organizing one year ago, and filed cards in October 2002,
expecting a November election.  The administration delayed the vote through
hearings which lasted into February, but lost its attempt to disenfranchise
85% of the nontenure-track faculty on every count.  The bargaining unit
includes full-time and part-time nontenure-track faculty, including those
with dual contracts (i.e. civil service, faculty associates or lab school
teachers, and administrative professionals).  Emeriti
(tenured/tenure-track) faculty are excluded.

Jane Buck. Ph.D., National President of the American Association of
University Professors commented, "Congratulations to the Illinois State
University Nontenure Track Faculty Association- IEA/NEA. on its stunning
certification vote."   Sandra Flood of Northern Illinois University's
adjunct association and David Radavitch of Eastern Illinois University's
union (UPI/AFT) also sent their congratulations.

Nontenure-track faculty at Northern Illinois University, Eastern Illinois
University, and Western Illinois University have been organized for over a
decade.  ISU's NTTs make up 40% of the total faculty, and teach over 1/3 of
all classes.  For more information on the campaign, go to ntt.pabn.org.
