Strike April 30 - May 2

Members of AGSE/UAW have voted to conduct a short GSI (TA) strike on the Berkeley campus next week. This strike will be three days in duration and will begin April 30th. Picket lines will go up at 7:30 AM and come down at 5:30 PM.

During these three days, AGSE is asking all members of the campus community to stay off campus while picket lines are up. Those prevented from honoring the strike by contractual obligations are asked to wear red during the strike, unless other arrangements with your unions have been made. Take a look at how UPTE is supporting the strike.

This strike will initiate over a month of planned work stoppages and demonstrations at Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCSC, and UCSB, and is part of our ongoing battle for recognition. At present, without collective bargaining, GSIs have no say whatsoever in the conditions under which they are employed. Despite AGSE's recent success in signing up over half (ie. about one thousand) of the TAs on the campus to current membership cards, and thus demonstrating (i) that a majority of TAs want collective bargaining, and (ii) that they have chosen AGSE/UAW as their collective bargaining agent, the administration has refused to recognize the union and the rights of TAs to bargain collectively. The administration is not only disrespecting democratic principle by not recognizing a union with over 50 percent memberhsip, but is also ignoring a September 1996 ruling by Judge James Tamm ordering the UCLA to recognize the rights of TAs on that campus to union representation. Rather than abide by this decision, the UC has instead elected to waste public money appealing the decision.
