Resume Review Service Red Hot at Chilly Midwinter

By Donna Braquet & Susie Skarl, Co-Chairs, Resumé Review Service Committee

Resume Review ServiceNeither the frigid temperatures nor the snow showers kept the crowds away from the NMRT Resume Review Service Committee area, located in the ALA Placement Center. Between Friday and Monday at ALA’s Midwinter Conference, approximately 200 conference attendees visited our booth and 113 had their resumes reviewer by our great group of resume reviewers!

Thanks to our energetic group of booth volunteers, visitors could set up appointments to have their resumes reviewed, check out employment-related resources provided by ALA’s Placement Center, or just take a moment to chat between interviews or meetings.

Reviewers came from all over the country, including Harvard; University of Nevada, Las Vegas; University of Colorado at Boulder; Dennison University; and many other academic, public, school, and special libraries. In addition to years of experience as librarians, many of our reviewers have been instrumental in the hiring process, have been on search committees or have expertise in human resources.
Comments from both job seekers and reviewers were very positive!

Job Seekers said:

“Thank you so much for providing this service! I graduate soon and my reviewer really helped me tweak my resume! I’m feeling much more confident about sending out my resume.”

“Everyone is so friendly here. I think I’m finally in the right field! You guys are so supportive to new librarians! Your advice about my resume and jobs has been great!”

“I really appreciate this service. My reviewer gave me some great tips; I can’t wait to go home and edit my resume!”

And, more praise from reviewers:

“This is my first time reviewing and it was a great experience! Please sign me up for Chicago!”

“Reviewing resumes is my most rewarding and fun experience at ALA. Please be sure to e-mail me when you’re scheduling for Annual!”

“You guys did a great job! I think this was one of the most well-organized, successful Resume Review Services you’ve ever done! I look forward to doing it at Annual!”

The RRS Committee would like to say thank you once again to all of our terrific volunteers and reviewers, and to ALA Placement Center Director Beatrice Calvin and her colleagues for making our Boston event such a success!

If you didn’t have a chance to have an in-person resume review in Boston, don’t worry—we provide the review service to NMRT members year-round via e-mail! Just visit the RRS site for instructions on e-mailing a resume and/or cover letter to the RRS Committee. Then, we will match your library-type interests and specialties with a reviewer, who will send you suggestions via email. The entire process takes about two weeks.

If you would like face-to-face assistance, the on-site Resume Review Service will be available during the American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago for all conference attendees, not just NMRT members.
