By Chrissie Anderson Peters

Jenkins photoWilliam C. Jenkins, "BillJ" to NMRT'ers, joined ALA and New Members Round Table in 1995 and currently serves an extended appointment as NMRT Treasurer. The Distance Learning Librarian at Southern Methodist University, Bill did his undergraduate work at Cornell University and went to library school at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. During his time in NMRT, Bill has served on the Publicity Committee and the President's Program Committee, as well as Chairing the ECRC and maintaining the NMRT-L list as listowner. His term as Assistant Treasurer began in 2001 and Bill agreed to serve an extra year in the capacity of Treasurer last year (for the current committee year ), when the elected Assistant Treasurer was unable to fulfill his duties as such.

In 1996, Bill received the Outstanding Service Award from the New York State Library Assistants' Association, another organization that he joined in 1995. His hobbies include "travel and finding new things in different places (art, food, shopping.)" When asked where he most likes to travel, Bill answers, "I have too many places that I like to travel to for a favorite, but I always look forward to going to San Francisco each June for the home season of the Joe Goode Performance Group."

Currently, Bill serves as an Intern with the ALA Membership Committee and his hope is to be able "to continue that level of involvement with ALA since [his] 10 years in NMRT are almost up."

Being a 10-year "veteran" of New Members Round Table, we asked "BillJ" some NMRT-specific questions including what his favorite thing about NMRT is, what his favorite NMRT activities are, and what his favorite NMRT memory is from his time of involvement in the group. "My favorite thing about NMRT is everyone's enthusiasm," he answers. "My favorite NMRT activity is the Mentoring program at Annual, both as a mentee at my first conference in NYC, and as a mentor at the past several conferences." Culling many, many memories of times and activities with the group, he recounts, "My favorite NMRT memory is attending other ALA meetings as the NMRT [representative], especially the ERT [Exhibits Round Table] board meetings. Attending these other meetings allowed me to witness how other parts of the [ALA] organization work and to learn things that I would not have heard of otherwise."

BillJ, thanks for taking such great care of NMRT! Your membership - and leadership - have been greatly appreciated!
